How to get to Uvita? All travel options

Practical information about Uvita

Uvita is a small town on the Osa peninsula that is relaxed, quiet, undeveloped and very hospitable. All this will allow you to enjoy the many attractions and see the joy of Ticos. The people who live here are known for their simplicity and friendliness, wherever you need, there will be a local to help you.

This is a wonderful coastal destination located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. In addition to its beaches, which are both located in Marino Ballena National Park and those nearby, it offers a unique opportunity for whale watching. For this reason, Uvita attracts nature lovers from all over the world for walks, bike rides and much more.

How to get to Uvita?

Uvita has natural landscapes of proverbial beauty such as the Uvita, Santa Lucía and Nauyaca waterfalls and the Ballena Marine National Park. Horseback riding, snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving are very popular activities, while those of you who prefer a more leisurely pace can take long walks along the coast, sunbathe on the beach and enjoy the fabulous scenic beauty and marine life that Playa Uvita has to offer.

But let’s start at the beginning, which is how to get to Uvita:

By plane

You will likely land at the Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José (SJO). Once there, you can take small local airlines that serve local airports around the country. Within an hour, you can already be on the Osa Peninsula and enjoying the coastal climate. You can find prices and exact flight schedule on the Sansa airline website.

By bus

TRACOPA operates a public bus service between Uvita and San José. In case your plane landed in Quepos, you can also take the bus to Uvita. The buses are comfortable and you can use them to get to Uvita fairly quickly and comfortably. For details, prices, and schedules, visit TRACOPA’s website.

By car

Driving in Costa Rica is quite convenient and the roads are straight and well marked. Especially if you take the main route that connects the two borders of the country. To get to Uvita from San José you have two very different options, the first is to take highway 27 towards Caldera, then in Orotina you go through the toll booths where you pay depending on the vehicle you are driving and you get off on highway 34 (south coast) towards Uvita de Osa. The other option is to take highway 2 towards San Isidro de El General and then exit onto highway 243 until you reach your destination. Travel time is approximately 3.5 hours.

If you are wondering whether to rent a 4-wheel drive car or a regular passenger car, the answer depends on your plans. If you plan to drive only on main roads and don’t plan any shortcuts through unpaved roads, a regular car will be the optimal and cheaper solution. However, if you plan to explore the surrounding mountains, rivers or venture deep into the wilderness, a four-wheel drive car will be necessary. For both options, we recommend that you purchase additional, full coverage insurance to protect you from additional costs if you accidentally damage something.
