What to expect from a snorkel tour in Marino Ballena?

Snorkeling trips in Marino Ballena Park start at our dive center, where we will welcome you with a bottle of water and complete all the formalities. We will also discuss the day’s schedule and safety rules. Then we will head to the beach where our boat will be waiting to take us to the best snorkeling spots in Marino Ballena.

Since Marino Ballena National Park is very close, our trip will be short. For this reason, we can start the tour a little later than the trips to Isla del Caño. The whole trip will last a few hours, during which you will see several snorkeling spots.

All water activities will be accompanied by a guide who will also try to find and show you interesting animals. Snacks and drinks will be available to you in between the water entries. Of course, you can return to the boat at any time. Eventually we will return to the beach where the captain will step off the boat. If you feel like it, you can stay in the national park, as the tickets are valid for the whole day.

A snorkeling trip in Marino Ballena National Park is a great way to spend a family day and experience the underwater beauty of Costa Rica. We’ve collected some of the most frequently asked questions about snorkeling, and you’ll find the answers below. Feel free to contact our dive center at any time if you have questions or would like to make a reservation.

Is Marino Ballena National Park worth visiting?

Marino Ballena Park was established in 1989, making it the first marine national park in Costa Rica. The main purpose of the park is to protect species of commercial value, as well as other important biological specimens. El Tómbolo de Punta Uvita is probably the most photogenic site in Marino Ballena. This unusual rock formation was formed by the collapse of sea waves.

From a bird’s eye view, the site looks like a whale’s tail, further emphasizing the importance of the site in protecting marine life, including large whales. At low tide there is a narrow strip of beach connecting the beach to Tómbolo. This allows dry foot passage to the tail hole. However, at high tide this area is flooded and the passage is completely hidden under water. For this reason, the passage is called “the path of Moses”. All this makes Marino Ballena National Park definitely a place worth visiting, and a snorkeling tour will give you a better idea of the place.

Is snorkeling safe?

Snorkeling is swimming on the surface of the water with a mask and snorkel. This allows you to see below the surface of the water and you don’t have to stick your head out every now and then to take a breath of air. At our dive center, all water activities take place under the supervision of experienced guides and diving instructors.

We are professionals, so our safety standards are high and procedures are proven. The snorkeling itself is very safe and suitable even for children. Especially since each swimmer is protected by a life jacket and the guide always enters the water first and exits last. You can read more about snorkeling and safety rules on our blog: snorkeling in Costa Rica

Who can participate in a snorkeling trip in Marino Ballena?

As we already mentioned, snorkeling is great fun for the whole family. Children in particular will love the opportunity to look beneath the surface of the water. Our tours are designed for everyone, but we reserve certain restrictions to ensure the safety of our clients.

Generally, the age to participate in a tubing trip is 5 years old. If your child is younger, please contact us in advance to assess their ability and rules for participating in the tour. As with any other water activity, drinking alcohol is a bad idea and we may refuse to allow anyone on the boat who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Can I go snorkeling if I have a disability?

The ocean has the advantage that many of our limitations do not exist when we are in the water. Diving and snorkeling are highly recommended for people with physical and mental disabilities. Being immersed in water gives a sense of lightness, as if we are in a state of weightlessness. All movement limitations disappear and you can move with unprecedented ease. Our dive center is adapted to serve people with disabilities. Please contact us in advance so we can prepare everything for your arrival.
