What to Expect

Snorkeling trips in Marino Ballena Park begin at our dive center, where we will greet you with a bottle of water and complete all the formalities. We will also discuss the day’s schedule and safety rules. Then we will head to the beach where our boat will be waiting to take us to the best snorkeling spots in Marino Ballena.

Since Marino Ballena National Park is very close, our trip will be short. For this reason, we can start the tour a little later than the trips to Isla del Caño. The whole trip will last a few hours, during which you will see several snorkeling spots.

All water activities will be under the guidance of a guide, who will also try to find and show you interesting animals. In between the water entries, snacks and drinks will be at your disposal. Of course, you can return to the boat at any time. Eventually we will return to the beach, where the captain will disembark us from the boat. If you feel like it, you can stay in the national park, as the tickets are valid all day.

A snorkeling trip at the Marino Ballena National Park is a great way to spend a family day and see the underwater beauty of Costa Rica. We’ve collected a few of the most frequently asked questions about snorkeling and you can find answers to them below. At any time, you can contact our diving center if you have questions or want to make a reservation.

Is Marino Ballena National Park worth visiting?

Marino Ballena Park was established in 1989, making it the first marine national park in Costa Rica. The main purpose of the park is to protect species of commercial value, as well as other important biological specimens. El Tómbolo de Punta Uvita is perhaps the most photogenic site in Marino Ballena. This unusual rock formation was formed by the collapse of sea waves.

From a bird’s eye view, the site looks like a whale’s tail, further emphasizing the importance of the site for the protection of marine life, including large whales. At low tide there is a narrow strip of beach connecting the beach to Tómbolo. This makes it possible to walk to the tailrace with dry feet. However, at high tide this area is flooded and the passage is completely hidden under water. For this reason, this passage is called “the path of Moses”. All this makes Marino Ballena National Park definitely a place worth visiting, and a snorkeling tour will only help you get to know the place better.

Is snorkeling safe?

Snorkeling is swimming on the surface of the water with a mask and snorkel. This allows you to look under the surface of the water and you don’t have to stick your head out every now and then to take a breath of air. At our dive center, all water activities take place under the supervision of experienced guides and diving instructors.

We are professionals, so our safety standards are high and procedures are proven. Snorkeling itself is very safe and suitable even for children. Especially since each swimmer is protected by a life jacket and the guide is always the first to enter the water and the last to leave it. More about snorkeling and safety rules you can read on our blog: snorkeling in Costa Rica

Who can participate in a snorkeling trip in Marino Ballena?

As we mentioned earlier, snorkeling is great fun for the whole family. Children in particular will love the opportunity to look beneath the surface of the water. Our tours are designed for everyone, but we do reserve some restrictions to ensure the safety of our clients.

In general, the age to participate in a snorkeling tour is 5 years old. If your child is younger, you will need to contact us in advance to assess your child’s ability and rules for participating in the tour. As with any water activity, drinking alcohol is a bad idea and we may refuse to allow anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs to board the boat.

Can I go snorkeling if I have a disability?

The ocean has the advantage that many of our limitations do not exist when we are in the water. Diving and snorkeling are highly recommended for people with physical and mental disabilities. Being immersed in the water allows you to feel light, like you are in a state of weightlessness. All movement limitations disappear and you can move with unprecedented ease. Our dive center is adapted and has the ability to serve clients with disabilities. Please contact us in advance so we can prepare everything for your arrival.
