What to Expect

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program begins with a short theory lesson and pool exercises. After learning the general principles of dive equipment and safety rules, you will perform one dive accompanied by an instructor.

The maximum depth of descent is 12m (40 feet). The entire dive takes approximately 40 minutes, but this is dependent on air consumption. After the dive you will receive a certificate confirming your participation in the PADI DSD program. You can show this certificate when enrolling in the PADI Open Water Diver course so that your first dive is counted as part of the course.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the Caño Island Biological Reserve, which is considered one of the best dive sites in Costa Rica.

The first dive in your life is something unforgettable that will accompany you for a lifetime. You will discover new possibilities and see what humans are capable of with the help of modern equipment. Trying scuba diving in Costa Rica like this is a great way to see the underwater world in a safe and comfortable environment. Below we have collected some of the most frequently asked questions about trying scuba diving and prepared answers to them. Feel free to contact our dive center if you have any questions.

What is the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is designed for people who would like to try scuba diving. If you want to see if scuba diving is for you, the DSD would be a good idea before deciding to take a scuba diving course. You don’t have to worry about operating diving equipment or navigating underwater. The instructor will do it all for you, and your only responsibility will be to breathe and enjoy the view.

Do I need to know how to swim?

This answer may surprise you, but you don’t have to know how to swim to scuba dive. When you are underwater, you use scuba gear, especially a buoyancy vest. This is what keeps you at your desired depth and prevents you from sinking. Being able to swim is helpful in scuba diving, but it is not at all necessary. It is worth noting that scuba diving is practiced even by disabled people who cannot swim. Being underwater is a window to new experiences for them.

Can you breathe with the mask on?

Diving mask is one of the basic pieces of equipment. It is put on the face in such a way that it protects the eyes and covers the nose. Therefore, we will not be able to breathe through the nose, but we can successfully breathe through the mouth with the help of the diving regulator. This is a special device that supplies air from the cylinder directly to the mouth. Breathing through such a regulator does not differ from breathing on the surface and does not cause any difficulties.

Can I dive alone after completing the PADI Discover Scuba Diver?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diver program is a way to explore the underwater world and see if you would like to become a certified diver. Participating in this program does not give you a diver’s license and does not entitle you to dive independently. However, if you decide that you would like to take a scuba diving course and obtain a diver’s license, a test dive can be counted as part of the course. Contact us for details.

How long does an air tank last?

The maximum time for a test dive is 45 minutes, as this is regulated by national park and biological reserve regulations. On average, the air supply in the cylinder is sufficient for that long of being underwater. But it really all depends on you. If you breathe fast and your excitement reaches its peak, the air will be used up faster and your dive will be shorter. However, you can be sure that you will not run out of air. Your instructor will guide the dive according to your abilities and will constantly check the air level.
