Navigating underwater is a key skill for any diver. You’ve already learned the basics of navigation in the basic diving course and the advanced course. Now it’s time to become an expert with the PADI Underwater Navigation Specialty Course.

The goal of the underwater navigation specialty course is to deepen knowledge and develop practical skills related to underwater navigation, through the use of developed practical exercises, both with a compass and natural navigation.

The PADI Underwater Navigator specialization will help you better understand the essence of underwater navigation and refine the techniques you have already learned. This will help you better find your way underwater and conduct dives according to plan.

Navigating underwater is sometimes not as easy as it might seem. Especially when visibility is poor. How to deal with it and not waste time looking for a dive site? This is what the underwater navigation specialization course will teach you.

You will improve the already known techniques of compass navigation, natural navigation and combined techniques. In addition, you will learn some new techniques for measuring distance and finding your way underwater. This course is sure to expand your confidence underwater.

What to Expect on PADI Underwater Navigator?

The PADI Underwater Navigator course in Costa Rica lasts two days and includes theoretical classes and 4 training dives. During the training we use standard recreational diving equipment. Your training includes theoretical training in the form of e-learning, so you can start the course anywhere and anytime. Later, your instructor will test your knowledge and clarify any doubts.

Underwater Navigation 

During the training you will learn and practice several methods of dive planning and underwater navigation. You will learn to choose the best method for the prevailing conditions and, most importantly, to plan the entire dive correctly. During the training you will practice methods of underwater navigation in changing conditions and visibility.

However, before jumping into the water, you will practice all the techniques on land to thoroughly understand their principles. Under water, everything will be more difficult, so you will repeatedly practice tasks to get to perfection.

What to Expect on PADI Search and Recovery

What will I learn in this course?

The PADI Underwater Navigator course begins with a theoretical section that describes the techniques you will practice underwater. In the next stage, the isntructor will demonstrate these techniques to you on land, and you will practice them before entering the water. The next part consists of four open-water dives, during which you will practice navigating a variety of terrain and conditions. At the end of the course, each student will plan and conduct his or her own dive based on the navigation techniques learned.

What equipment will I be using on this course?

During this diving course you will use the standard diving equipment that you already know from the basic course. A compass and a slate for taking notes will be essential, of course.

Where will I dive during this PADI course?

Depending on current availability and ocean conditions, we always try to select the best locations for training. An exact schedule will be provided when you sign up for the course, but if you have any questions, please contact our office. We usually try to have our dives done on Isla del Cano.
